Meet the Artist: Tina Smith

Tina Smith started writing in earnest when she was around twelve years. Around that time she began to have trouble understanding the world around her, trouble processing the meaning of things. So, she wrote in order to clarify her emotions and thoughts to herself.

During those early days, Tina was influenced by “some really good songwriters”, like Jackson Browne, Stevie NicksJoan Baez, to name a few. But as she began to grow as an artist, those influences were not as strong to her. Her intent is to express, in her own way, and the absolute pinnacle of her ability, what she sees. What she knows to be true and good and worthy of being spoken. “Of course, I only have my individual understanding and there are so many facets of Truth. It is a never-ending quest! And that’s what makes it fascinating and addictive. I don’t listen to other music for inspiration. I listen to relax, to feel. I usually have so much rolling around in my head I sit down at the piano and something falls out! ” She follows that quote with a laugh.

From her official website bio:

Real-life experiences are a source of inspiration for Tina Smith, an instinctive singer/songwriter. Born into a family of musicians who ignited her love for music, Tina has performed for as long as she can remember.

Through her music, Tina shares the world as she sees it.  Her music urges the listener toward a deeper perception of the human experience, emphasizing the common threads that run through our lives.

Tina’s new album, AWAKE, was recorded and produced at Dark Horse Studios in Nashville, TN with world-renowned producer, Billy Smiley.

Tina’s previous album releases include Beyond MeChristmas Joy, and The Mirror (ACA Records) and EP Six Time Lustre (Bread and Nails Productions).
In her early career, she opened for noteworthy bands including KansasThe Guess Who, Mother’s FinestThe Marshall Tucker Band and Blackfoot while touring with The Trend and Cape Fear.

Recently, Tina produced a video for her song The Shore, which can be viewed here.

She also starred in a short film for Arimuse Productions, entitled The Fervent, playing a woman trying to cope with the loss of her son. View a synopsis of the film here:

Tina is inspired by nature, creation, and the human experience.

Meet the Mural Artists

Gaeten Lowrie:

Gaeten Lowrie is a visual artist based in Wilmington, NC, USA. He is most known for his signature pen & ink style, which is often compared to stained glass because of its highly-saturated jewel tones. Artist Gaeten Lowrie’s murals perfectly depict the positive vibes in Leland’s new Eternal Sunshine Café and LunaBelle Gift Shop and Gallery. For a complete interview see: https://lifeinbrunswickcounty.com/a-sunny-match/

Nancy Turner:
Nancy Turner lives in Southport, North Carolina where she creates art and teaches it. She is originally from Massachusetts but has been a North Carolina resident for twenty years now. Nancy is a visual artist who paints with acrylics, oils, watercolors, and her favorite; alcohol inks. She also creates and sells Resin art, such as coasters and lazy Susan’s. Her favorite piece of art that she has created is the image below of the ship on glass with the alcohol inks.

How did you get into art initially?
“In school I did mostly charcoal portraits, but life and work took over. Ironically, at 65 I attended a paint and sip party aboard a cruise ship in Hawaii. I fell in love with painting again and came home and started creating.”

How has your art changed over time?

“My art has dramatically changed, from classes, to practice, practice, practice. I usually paint everyday. I’ve explored all mediums; even making jewelry with alcohol inks.”

Have you always wanted to create art?
“Yes, and I can’t wait to start on the wall mural in Holden Beach.”

Who inspires you the most?
“Certainly the obvious ones; Van Gogh, Manet, etcetera, but I’ve also learned a lot from painters such as Bob Ross and Leonid Afremov.” Nancy also credits some of her inspiration to the Alcohol Ink Society’s talented artists and teachers, who give her monthly challenges to expand her comfort zone.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
“Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they like it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.” – Andy Warhol

Meet Brunswick Intarsia Artist: Bradley Eklund

Photo: Bradley Eklund and Rhonda Bellamy of New Hanover Arts Council. Brunswick County Artist Bradley received a Regional Artist Grant to allow him to purchase a sander. Brunswick Arts Council is a partner with this grant program- congratulations! Article by Megan Pedigo, BAC Intern.

Bradley Eklund and his wife, Hazel Trinidad, are local wood artists who specialize in an art form known as Intarsia, which uses small segments of wood that can be shaped, carved, and assembled to create an image of some sort. They also create Free Standing Puzzles, which are similar to jigsaw puzzles except they stand up, and use the same tools and techniques as Intarsia. Both of these art forms require much skill, and ultimately are very time consuming and tedious. Bradley would love to see more diverse artists and Intarsia artists come out and express their work.

How did you initially get into wood art?
“I was wood-working probably at 10 years old. My grandfather originally did it just as a hobby, and he kind of taught me a little bit. Then I went to high school and we had a big wood working shop there. I spent a lot of time there. I also had a neighbor who took me on as an imprentence, and he was an antique furniture replicator and restorer. He kind of taught me some things, also.” Bradley and Hazel, initially took this up as a hobby, but have been doing it full time since 2014. He would describe himself as an “accidental artist”, for he did not intend for it to become a full time job.
How has your art changed over time?
“We first started making things; they were just puzzles. We still make puzzles, but now we don’t use any stains or dyes and we use premium and high quality woods. It has just gotten a lot more refined.” They now create their own designs all from scratch and have a much bigger variety, while in the past they purchased the designs from magazines.
What inspires you and your work the most?
“Both myself and my wife are big environmental minded people. Something that is really important to us is the environment and wildlife, so we try to capture that in the work that we make. The other inspiration I’d say would probably be our kids. We have two kids, a 9 year boy, Tristan, and a 5 year old girl, Lily.”
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
“Never say never, because you never know, and if that was the case I would’ve not thought that I could be doing this now.” Overall, it has taken a lot of time and dedication, but what once used to be a hobby, is now a full time job for Bradley and Hazel.
