The Sunset Vision Group has issued a Call for Artists to Participate in the “Sunset Beach Nature & Wildlife Art Show” in June 2017. As part of its fundraising efforts to procure a commercial-grade bird and wildlife viewing binocular, Sunset Vision calls on artists to showcase the beauty of Sunset Beach in our first nature art show and sale to inspire appreciation and protection of our natural environment and its inhabitants. Sunset Vision, a nonprofit organization committed to enriching the community by funding and maintaining amenities and features that promote nature, education, enjoyment, and accessibility in the Sunset Beach Community is excited to host “Sunset Beach Nature & Wildlife Art Show” June 22 through June 24, 2017. The art will showcase the beauty of Sunset Beach’s wildlife and natural surroundings and the diverse creative talents of local and regional artists. Using Sunset’s birds, wildlife, waters, vegetation, and other natural environments as inspiration, artists will create original work for submission for the show and sale. The work will hang for 3 days in the DeSoto Classic Car Showroom with a reception on Friday, June 23, 2017. Art can be viewed on Thursday, June 22, 2017, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, during the opening reception on Friday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and on Saturday, June 24, 2017, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. The choice of venue was a conscious effort to showcase the intersection of expressive arts with industrial design, where both classic car and wildlife enthusiasts value conservation and preservation. Attendees will experience the cultural, ecological, nostalgic, and personal dimensions of art among cars in a museum-inspired setting. An important part of the exhibition will be to serve as a public relations and fundraising vehicle for Sunset Vision’s community gift of a commercial-grade binocular for bird and wildlife viewing, which will be installed at the Bird Walk at Twin Lakes on Shoreline Drive W. One hundred percent of the revenues resulting from the sale of artwork in the show will be applied to the procurement of the binocular. “The binocular, which will be free to use, and accessible for children and those will disabilities, has a high-powered optic to allow birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts to see birds and wildlife 10x closer, with a broad, panoramic view,” explains Melissa Warren, Sunset Vision board member. “It’s our goal to enhance the Sunset Beach experience for residents and visitors alike, and inspire people of all ages to appreciate and protect our natural environment and its inhabitants.” The purpose of the show and sale is three-fold: First, to promote the conservation and appreciation of Sunset Beach’s wildlife and environment through fundraising. Two, to showcase the extraordinary talents of local and regional artists, and three, to expose the nature art genre to new audiences. The Sunset Beach Nature & Wildlife Art Show is open to all artists 18 years of age and older. Artists may submit ORIGINAL two-dimensional (2-D) work to include painting, pastel, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital imaging, fiber art, mosaics, stained glass, mixed media, and three-dimensional (3-D) work. 70 percent of the proceeds of the sale will go to the artist, with 30 percent donated to Sunset Vision for the purchase of the binocular. There is a non-refundable entry fee of $20 for non-students and $10 for part-time or full-time students of an accredited school. Sunset Vision will offer monetary awards as well as honorable mention, and People’s Choice awards. The ballots for the People’s Choice award will be tallied after the opening reception on Friday, and the award will be given on Saturday, June 24.
“We are thrilled that we’ll be able to offer monetary prizes for the show,” says Ms. Warren. “We know the importance of recognizing talent and supporting the arts in our community, as well as creating economic opportunities.” Deadline for completed works is Thursday, June 17, 2107. Accepted work must be hand-delivered on Thursday, 6/16/17 from 1-4 PM or Friday, 6/17/17 from 11 AM – 4 PM, 2017. An application form must be completed and each artist must register by 6/1/17.
