Until her death in 2013, oil painter Ramona Batsford Bendin was one of the area’s most prominent artists. Originally from New York, she had lived in coastal North Carolina since 1990, finding much of her inspiration from the local coastline and marshlands. She was a lifetime member of the American Artist Professional League and was elected to New York’s Hudson Valley Art Association. Locally, she was a member of Brunswick Arts Council, Wilmington Art Association, Associated Artists of Southport, and Waterway Art Association. Throughout her career, her peers awarded her many prestigious honors, including the Award of Excellence, National League of American Pen Women; Mrs. John Newington Portrait Award, Hudson Valley Art Assoc; Best In Show, National League of American Pen Women; and First Place, Associated Artists of Southport Spring Show.

Each year a prominent regional artist is asked the serve as judge for the show. This year, Sharon Wozniak Spencer, an award-winning artist, painter, educator, exhibitor and instructor at the Cameron Art Museum and Cape Fear Community will serve as judge. Sharon earned her BFA in art school at The University of Maryland (1990); an MA in art education at The Ohio State University (1996) and her MFA at the San Francisco Academy of Art University (2017). Sharon was an artist in resident for the Hope Center in Wilmington, NC where she created a series of paintings about those in need and Sharon was an intern for the Cameron Museum of Art, where she had a show and discussion on “Faces of Courage”.

Her current group show: Eden Village a Collective Exhibition, that she put together through the Wilson Center and the Wilma Daniels Gallery at CFCC is a benefit show for Eden Village of Wilmington. Further information is available in the bio, photo (below) and on her website: www.swspencer.com

Sharon Wozniak Spencer

Judge Artist Bio

Sharon Wozniak-Spencer grew up in the metropolitan area of Washington D.C., she was influenced heavily by her mother’s interest in art and frequent trips to museums. This created a desire for Sharon to earn her BFA in art school at The University of Maryland, where she graduated in 1990. Sharon continued to pursue an MA in art education at The Ohio State University where she completed her MA in 1996. The degree offered Sharon opportunities to teach at OSU as a teaching assistant and at local galleries.

Sharon continued to be heavily involved in pursuing her own art career, through shows at Cameron Art Museum, Land Fall Art Show, and the Arboretum Art Show, as well as others in Connecticut and Ohio. In order to develop her career further, she decided to pursue her MFA at the San Francisco Academy of Art University, where she graduated in 2017. While at AAU, Sharon was an artist in resident for the Hope Center in Wilmington, NC where she created a series of paintings about those in need and Sharon was an intern for the Cameron Museum of Art, where she had a show and discussion on “Faces of Courage”.

Her current group show: Eden Village a Collective Exhibition, that she put together through the Wilson Center and the Wilma Daniels Gallery at CFCC is a benefit show for Eden Village of Wilmington. Eden Village is creating 31 tiny homes for Wilmington’s chronically homeless. Sharon is very excited to put this show together as it will outlive the show and benefit. She helped coordinate other CFCC departments from Dental, Nursing, OT, EWD, and Phi Theta Kappa to help Eden Village’s community and residents. This to Sharon is a show well done as the community at large is involved in the benefit, students from CFCC and departments will be involved in bettering the community, and the community at large will be able to see the benefit of helping others in need.

Blueprint Brunswick 2040 Youth Art Contest Winners

In February of 2021 Brunswick County announced the Blueprint Brunswick 2040 Art Contest to invite the youth to help shape the County’s vision for the future! Through the support of Brunswick County Schools and a partnership with the Brunswick Arts County the Blueprint Brunswick 2040 Art was created to raise awareness and increase community engagement for the Blueprint Brunswick 2040 Project in a fun interactive way! The Contest invited the youth of Brunswick County to contribute to a significant County-wide planning process by helping shape the vision of the future.

The contest was open to students in grades K-12 or those homeschooled from ages 5 to 17 and invited schools from around the County to participate including Brunswick County Schools, homeschools, as well as charter and private schools. Participants were asked to show their vision of Brunswick County’s future using mediums such as acrylic paint, watercolors, tempera paint, colored pencils, markers, and crayons with a submission deadline of March 31st.

Entries were separated into 4 grade level categories: grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards were given in each category with $100 checks from the Brunswick Arts Council for the schools with the most submissions. Waccamaw School submitted the most submissions in the K-2 and 3-5 grade categories and tied with Leland Middle School in the 6-8 category. North Brunswick High School had the most submissions in the 9-12 grade category.

Local artists and members of the Planning and Parks and Recreation Departments judged the submissions and decided the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners within each category. In addition, the Planning Department and Parks and Recreation Department each picked their favorite. Contest winners were announced May 4th. Prizes for winners include gift cards, art supplies, and a framed award.

The Blueprint Brunswick 2040 Youth Art Contest increased participation and engagement with the Blueprint Brunswick 2040 Plan as well as promoted the arts in Brunswick County. Be sure to look for the winning artwork on June 19th, 2021 at the Brunswick Arts Council’s Solstice by the Sea Festival at Middleton Park in Oak Island as well as in the upcoming Brunswick County Future Land Use Plan and Parks and Recreation Master Plan!
