Dickens Festival 2013 Overview

The Charles Dickens Christmas Festival

Friday, the 22nd, 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Saturday, the 23rd, 10am to 6pm
Artisan/Craftsmen/Exhibitors and Food Vendors:  November 23rd, 2013

Event Description:  The Brunswick Arts Council and the City of Southport, NC are teamed up to once again offer a special day of cultural events featuring juried artisans, craftsmen, exhibitors  and performing artists – a day of enrichment and fun!  We honored Charles Dickens on the 200th anniversary of his birth in 2012 and a tradition was born.  The Brunswick Arts council is a not for profit, tax deductible organization with a mission to inspire and promote appreciation for a broad range of cultural interests that benefit Brunswick County students, artists and arts-related organizations. Proceeds for this event are used to support the advancement of arts and culture in schools and the community through funding of programs and events.

We are hoping to transform the streets of Southport into everything Dickens. There will be singing groups, juried artists and specialty craftsmen; a gingerbread village, a Christmas tree and costume contest; and, of course, FOOD and FROTH.  On display will be the new 48’ touring train exhibit from the Wilmington Train Museum and the very recent award winning exhibit “Fantasy under the Sea” by The Wood-turners.  The popular high teas will again be served locally!  Merchants and Restaurants in Southport will be poised for the increased activity that the festival brings their way.  Trolley rides and fun for all ages!  The event will end with “A Tribute to Charles Dickens Candlelight Ceremony and ringing and singing in the holidays!”

Events:  Located in Franklin Square Park in Historic Downtown Southport, North Carolina will be artisans/craftsmen/exhibitors and food vendors.  The Southport Community Building will have two performances of The 2013 Dickens Musical Revue – one Friday night from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, and one on Saturday from 1:00pm to 2:00pm.  Both events will have an Old English Victorian Social gathering beforehand with a cash Pub and silent auction.  Trinity United Methodist Church will be hosting the performance of David zum Brennan presenting The Night before Christmas Carol.  The Christian Ministry Center (CMC) at Southport Baptist Church will display the Gingerbread Village, the Christmas Trees and Christmas Wreaths.  The Southport Gym will host the Wilmington train, wood-turners and a special surprise exhibit.
