The Brunswick Arts Council recently presented its annual $1000 Scholarship to Abbie Leigh Nixon from Early College High School. The award is presented to deserving students seeking to begin higher education and/or vocational studies beyond secondary education. Prior to awarding the scholarship, the BAC reviews Brunswick County Schools’ student applicants from various social, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds who are interested in educational opportunities for scholarships that will empower those recipients to become informed and educated contributors to society.
Abbie , who is ranked near the top of her class, has been active in various clubs, leadership events, and community service throughout her school career. She participates in the School of Rock Club, Drama Club, Student Council, Legacy Youth Group, Musician’s Club, Glee Club, National Honor Society. In addition to those groups, Abbie participates in various community service committees to help those less fortunate. As such, she volunteers at Snipes Academy of art and Design where she works with underprivileged children. She has earned several awards, including the Academic Excellence Award. She has consistently been on the Brunswick Community College Honor Roll. During all of this, she has also worked as a hostess or waitress.
Abbie has been described by her teachers as “a diligent, hardworking student who is concerned about the quality of her craft.” She often mentors and tutors other musicians to help fellow students grow. She will be attending Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she plans to major in Songwriting and Music Business.
